Food
In
a recent survey of quality foods among countries
-Zimbabwe came tops as the most cost effective! There
was even a joke about western countries importing
cars from Zimbabwe as everything is of the right
price when using major foreign currency!
However this limelight image is only a dream
to the majority of Zimbabweans as the local
dollar is crumbling by the day. Basic bread
and meat has been evaluated only for special
events.
Nevertheless,restaurants selling discounted
meals of about Z$50 have been sprouting all
over towns. Meal businesses have hit the top
three selling mostly local produce!
The staple food in Zimbabwe is sadza (harden
maize porridge). The traditional diet is usually
sadza and a relish of either beef, pork or vegetables.
Hotels mainly serve English meals to exotic
dishes. Game meat , Kapenta from Kariba and
fruits and vegetables mainly from the Eastern
Highlands and Mutoko make up the food structure
of Zimbabwe. Maltinationals and indigenous companies
have made many goods available in the developed
world available locally. Zimbabwe rarely imports
any food stuff although our fruits and meats
have found their way in Europe.
Drink
Tape
water in Zimbabwe is highly regarded as safe
and the public is invited to visit purification
centres by appointment , if in doubt. However
there is bottled water - both still and sparkling
welled from springs in the Eastern Highlands.
On the alcohol side -Zimbabwe has its own traditional
beer 'Scud' named after the missile's of lraq.
Scud is a porridge-like beer designed to be
shared.Zimbabwe's fine lagers are :Castle,Lion,Black
Label,Zambezi,Pilsener and Bohlinger.Local wines
come from the Cain's Group although Zimbabwe
imports a wide range from Ireland, South Africa,France,Australia
and Russia.
Mazoe Orange Drink is one unique soft drink, all
fruit with no yoke of chemicals. 'Zimbabweans
living outside the country are often heard emphasising
how Coca Cola and Fanta taste different outside
the country'. lts also buffing to them why pinenut,
cherry and creamsoda - all brands of Coca Cola
are only now beginning to be introduced in Europe
on a trial basis while they have enjoyed these
for years!Soft drinks in Zimbabwe can also be
bought in powder form.
